According to a recent interview with the outlet Glixel, Bethesda’s director and executive producer Todd Howard has declared the company’s intentions for Fallout 4 in VR to be even more ambitious than previously imagined. To be specific, when asked if the studio is “trying to put all of [the game] in VR,” Howard provided a direct response, saying, “We definitely are.”
As some fans may be aware, Bethesda already has a Fallout 4 VR demo in order to give fans a sense of the immersion that will occur once players are taken to a segmented virtual reality version of the game’s Boston Wastelands. Nevertheless, Howard and his team want to expand the trial setting in order to include the game’s entire open world, and he believes doing so would offer up a distinctive experience necessary to help move the VR medium forward. For example, when asked if sales for Fallout 4 in VR are a concern, the studio executive replied, “That will all sort itself out. We have an opportunity to make something really unique. We’d rather do that than make some other tiny experience. I don’t think that’s what people want from us.”
Although the VR marketplace is definitely small at the moment, it’s decidedly picking up steam, for just recently, the PlayStation VR got named one of the Best Inventions of 2016 by TIME Magazine. So, with a decent portion of media attention already covering VR, a Fallout 4 game in full virtual reality would surely help generate further interest in the hardware, as the base game itself was generally believed to be one of the best video games of 2015.
