In the latest update for Beyond Good and Evil 2, a new trailer shows off visually stunning pre-alpha footage of how players can navigate the large world. Creative manager Jean-Marc Geffroy reveals that the player character is a pirate, a topic the team plans to dive into further in the main game. Footage also shows a bit of combat by a character known as Shani who wields a bladed staff type of weapon, an intentional callback to the first game where the protagonist Jade utilized a Dai-jo combat staff.

For this spiritual successor, Ubisoft is crafting plenty of large open world spaces for players to explore. Naturally, as a pirate, ships play a major roll in the experience. To assist in traversal, players get access to a smaller personal aircraft as well as a jetpack. What’s interesting is that players can seamlessly exit their ship, switch to a jetpack, explore a bit, and then enter their ship and take right off. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is a shared world experience, so players can opt to participate in world events with other players or form armadas with other players by traveling at high speeds together in individual ships.

With Ubisoft more focused on live service style games these days as well as the fact that the last Beyond Good and Evil game released almost 15 years ago, it’d be natural for people to assume that the company is taking a pretty big risk with this upcoming game. Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot feels otherwise, however, stating that he’s confident that the title will be able to appeal to both longtime players and those who may not have experienced the original title. With longtime developer Michel Ancel back on board as creative director, fans can be sure that the game is in capable hands to deliver on quality.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is currently in development but does not currently have a target release date or platforms.
