At Special Olympics will be athletes having intellectual disabilities showcasing their talent and thus having an opportunity of being as enthusiastic, courageous and accepted as any other player. 7000 athletes from around 177 countries will be competing in various games, India being one among them.
Special Olympics Bharat will be representing more than 320 athletes, coaches and officials. In the words of National Sports Director of Bharat Special Olympics Victor Vaz, “These special children are needed. They are accepted. For the very first time in international arena, four special athletes (one being from Maharashtra) are going to represent as coach assistants for the World Games. India is also making its debut in Softball.
WWE acknowledged this effort made by Bharat for this usually neglected section and hence announced their partnership. Rukn Kizilbash, the General Manager of WWE India said, “We at WWE aim at giving back to the society. Let’s spread the message of acceptance.”
He further elaborated the support of WWE for Bharat saying that, “As a promotional partner for the 2015 special Olympics world games, WWE will utilise all its platforms including TV and pay per view (PPV) broadcasts, live trends, digital and social media to generate massive awareness and support.”
Team India outfits which were made and sponsored by WWE were also unveiled. These bright coloured costumes had the logo of WWE and Special Olympics. Previously at the Summer Special Olympics games in Athens 2011, 246 Bharat delegates had participated and brought home 78 gold, 79 silver and 92 bronze medals. This time too, all these confident athletes aim to win.
In the words of one amongst them, “I’ll win and also advance ahead.”
